In 1811, the HMS Saldanha sank and 254 people died, the only survivor being the captain's parrot. After this tragedy, a lighthouse was built at Fannet Point as it was then known, and on St. Patrick’s Day 1817, the light was lit for the first time.<br /><br />Fanad Lighthouse remains an iconic working lighthouse at the mouth of Lough Swilly.
